In a milestone development for Singapore’s healthcare system, the Specialists Accreditation Board (SAB) will officially recognise Family Medicine as the nation’s 36th medical specialty from November 1, 2025, with the full support of the Ministry of Health (MOH).
The move affirms the vital role family doctors play in community-based and preventive care, as Singapore continues shifting its healthcare focus from hospital-based treatment to primary care and chronic disease management.
According to MOH, family physicians who have attained the Fellowship of the College of Family Physicians (Singapore) will be invited to apply for specialist accreditation in the first intake. Over 200 doctors currently hold this fellowship, which signifies advanced clinical training and leadership in community medicine.
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung described the recognition as a crucial step in preparing for an ageing population:
“As we shift the centre of gravity of our healthcare system away from hospitals to the community, family doctors are our trusted advisers who help us manage our health and stay well.”
An advanced Family Medicine programme is also being developed, with its first intake expected in 2028. This will set new standards for specialist accreditation, ensuring that Singapore’s family physicians continue to deliver high-quality, holistic care across generations.
This recognition marks a major leap forward for Singapore’s primary healthcare sector, empowering general practitioners with clearer professional pathways and reaffirming their role as the backbone of long-term community care.
