Chia Seeds: Tiny Superfood with Big Benefits — But Don’t Forget the Water

As featured in LADBible article

Chia seeds may be small, but they pack a mighty nutritional punch. Dietitian and nutritionist Lauren Manaker decided to eat them every day for a week to test whether they truly live up to their “superfood” label — and her results were impressive.

The Health Benefits

Chia seeds are rich in fibre, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, and antioxidants. When included in a balanced diet, they can:

  • Support digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements.
  • Help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • Stabilize energy levels and reduce sugar cravings.
  • Keep you feeling full longer, aiding in weight management.
  • Support brain and heart health due to their high omega-3 content.

Lauren found that after a few days, her digestion improved significantly and her energy levels stayed steady without mid-day crashes. She also felt fuller after meals, which reduced unnecessary snacking.

The Hydration Warning

However, experts warn that chia seeds must be consumed correctly. The seeds can absorb up to 12 times their weight in water, expanding into a gel-like texture. Eating them dry can cause dangerous blockages in the throat or intestines, especially if there isn’t enough fluid to help them pass through the digestive tract.

To enjoy their benefits safely, always soak chia seeds first (for example, in milk, yoghurt, or smoothies) or drink plenty of water alongside them. This allows the seeds to expand before ingestion and ensures they move smoothly through the system.

Final Takeaway

When eaten properly, chia seeds are a simple and affordable way to add vital nutrients to your daily diet. But moderation and hydration are key. As Lauren concluded:

“Chia seeds live up to their hype — but only if you eat them the right way. Start slow, soak them well, and drink your water.”
