A Cancer Journey: One Redditor’s Honest Account of Treatment and Recovery

October 9, 2025
in Inspirational Health Stories

At 35, Reddit user couldikareless was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. What followed was a year of treatment involving intravenous chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, marked by fear, fatigue, and resilience.

They began chemotherapy every three weeks, each session lasting four to eight hours. Despite having a severe fear of needles, they endured without using a port. “I cried each time,” they admitted, explaining that nurses helped by staying close and offering reassurance. They described chemo not as painful, but long and monotonous. The greater physical strain came later — fatigue, shingles, and infections from a weakened immune system.

Surgery, they said, was unexpectedly the hardest part of recovery, mainly due to the removal of lymph nodes, which caused prolonged pain and discomfort. Radiation therapy, in contrast, was described as technically demanding but brief — about five minutes a session for 15 days. It wasn’t painful, but the daily hospital trips and precision required made it emotionally draining.

They declined immunotherapy, citing preexisting immune issues and concern about worsening side effects. Throughout treatment, they managed to continue part-time work and light gym sessions, saying it helped keep their mind clear and maintain a sense of normalcy.

Side effects included hair loss, which they handled by shaving their head early, and fatigue, which they countered with patience and rest. They warned others to be careful around young children due to infection risks, noting that a simple cough once lasted two months.

Emotionally, the journey was filled with anxiety and occasional panic attacks, especially during procedures. Over time, they learned to show up for treatment the same way they showed up at the gym — with discipline and acceptance. They advised new patients not to overthink or consume too much alarming information online, which often intensified fear unnecessarily.

The key message to others was simple: take it easy on yourself. Cancer patients not to blame themselves for their illness and to take recovery at their own pace. “Cancer is just a rare mutation of cells that went rogue,” they said. “It’s not your fault.”

When another user, Zedwye, shared that they were awaiting test results before beginning treatment, couldikareless offered reassurance — to trust the process, consult multiple doctors, and find one who listens and treats the patient as a partner.

The exchange between the 2 Redditors highlighted the raw realities of treatment — fear, pain, exhaustion — but also persistence, routine, and the quiet strength found in simply continuing.
