The opening of Woodlands Health (WH) in May 2024 has significantly eased the bed crunch and reduced waiting times for patients in Singapore’s northern region, according to Professor Joe Sim, Group CEO of NHG Health.
Key Improvements
- Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), once overcrowded with patients on trolley beds, now operates smoothly with no corridor patients.
- The new hospital added 500 beds, complementing KTPH’s 800-bed capacity.
- Median waiting time for ward admission at KTPH dropped from 6.9 hours to 2.4 hours, below the national average of 4.9 hours.
- Occupancy rates in mid-September 2025 were 73–79% at KTPH and 77–86% at WH, compared with the national average of 84%.
Expansion Plans
- WH plans to expand from 500 to 900 beds by 2030, with potential to reach 1,400 if needed.
- Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) will add 600 more beds after 2030.
Patient & Staff Integration
- To build public trust, WH clinicians were stationed at KTPH to help transfer patients and reassure them about care quality.
- Patients were even offered ambulance rides to WH to facilitate the transition.
- Prof Sim emphasized a unified system: “When patients see the NHG Health logo, they can expect the same protocols and standards everywhere.”
Future Outlook
NHG Health aims to enhance preventive care and community engagement, partnering with GPs, nursing homes, and active ageing centres.
It is also collaborating with SingHealth and NUHS on shared technology and mental health management.
Prof Sim concluded that Singapore’s three healthcare clusters will increasingly operate as one integrated public system, ensuring efficient, high-quality care across all regions.
Editor Note: Waiting time reduction is excellent! Bed occupancy rates also give a lot of assurance.
