A 27-year-old Polish woman, Karolina Krzyzak, weighing only 27kg, was found dead at a Bali resort in December 2024 after living on a fruit-only diet and refusing medical help.

  • Krzyzak had long struggled with body image issues and anorexia, adopting veganism and later becoming involved with raw-vegan and fruitarian communities.
  • By her mid-20s, she followed an extreme diet, often eating just one fruit a day. Despite hotel staff urging her to see a doctor, she refused.
  • Friends and influencers within the fruitarian movement expressed concern but stopped short of pushing for medical intervention. Some argued her death was due to eating too little, not the fruitarian diet itself.
  • Krzyzak’s story highlights the risks of disordered eating promoted under the guise of “clean” or “natural” lifestyles, which are popularized by online wellness influencers.

Rest in Peace Karolina.
